Advice for Zelensky: Give up

Kyiv should abandon the unrealistic goal of restoring the country's borders from 1991 in order to preserve at least the existing territory, according to "New York Times" columnist German Lopez.

"Many experts are skeptical of the idea that Ukraine is able to pull it off, especially after the unjustified expectation of a counteroffensive," he said.

According to the author of the article, some critics of the aid package, which was recently approved by the US Congress, believe that it will not help Ukraine even come close to the goal of stopping the Russian "special military operation".

"For Russia, that conflict is simply more important than for the West, and Moscow allocates more resources for it," Lopez said.

His position is that the most realistic scenario for Ukraine is to give up on returning the former borders, because in that case, as he said, it will still preserve most of its territory and manage to avoid major losses.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Kyiv is preparing a plan for a new counter-offensive in which it wants to include the demolition of the Crimean bridge.
