Disaster: Death toll rises to 900; 3,000 injured PHOTO/VIDEO
The death toll from a powerful earthquake in eastern Afghanistan has risen to 900, and 3,000 people have been injured, local authorities said today, as rescue teams searched the affected area for survivors.
"The injured are being transported, so these numbers can change significantly," said Yusuf Hamad, spokesman for the National Disaster Management Directorate.
He added that the earthquake caused landslides in some areas, blocking roads, but that most have been reopened, and work is being done to clear others to access hard-to-reach areas.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 on the Richter scale hit the mountainous region of Afghanistan on Sunday evening, and the epicenter of the earthquake was not far from the city of Jalalabad near the border with Pakistan at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Officials said houses were razed to the ground in areas near Afghanistan's border with Pakistan.
