She will be the new president of Germany?
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is considering the option of nominating European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for the position of President of Germany in 2027, the newspaper Spiegel reported today, citing unnamed government sources.
Merz recently said that he thinks it would be good for a woman to be in the position of president soon, but that the list of candidates is "very short".
In 2024, Ursula von der Leyen was elected President of the European Commission for the second time, and her five-year term should end in 2029.
The German newspaper states that Ursula von der Leyen has already proven herself as a politician, pointing out that she was the first woman to hold the position of Minister of Defense of Germany and the first female president of the European Commission, and that the crown of her career would be to become the first female president of Germany.
Spiegel adds that by nominating Ursula von der Leyen, Merz would also prevent the "worst case scenario" for him, namely the nomination of former chancellor Angela Merkel for the post of president.
