The end; Călin Georgescu announced: I am retiring from politics
Romania's former independent presidential candidate Călin Georgescu has announced his retirement from politics after the end of the presidential election.
"The elections for the president of Romania are over. In this context, I have made the decision to end my active participation in the political process. I am currently focused on my family," he said in a video posted on his Facebook page.
Earlier, the portal "Hotnews" announced that Georgescu was summoned to the Romanian prosecutor's office to give a statement after a joint interview with the leader of the nationalist Union for the Unification of Romanians, George Simion, on "Realitatea Plus" television.
Presidential elections were held in Romania on November 24 last year, where independent candidate Călin Georgescu won the first round, winning 22.94 percent of the vote.
However, on December 6, 2024, the Constitutional Court of Romania annulled the election results and ordered a repeat of the election, due to Russia's alleged interference in the election process. Moscow has rejected those accusations.
In the repeated elections in May of this year, the former mayor of Bucharest, Nicușor Dan, is the new president of Romania, as he defeated the right-wing, Eurosceptic George Simion as an independent candidate in the second round of the repeated presidential elections.
