North Korea "drilling" for a nuclear counterattack?
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw exercises that simulated nuclear counterattacks against Seoul and Washington, local media reported today.
South Korea's military said the drills, which included "various types" of short-range ballistic missiles, could be linked to North Korean arms exports to Russia.
Russia and North Korea signed a joint strategic partnership agreement in June 2024 that provides for mutual military assistance in the event of an attack on either of them.
The drills included a missile system and a tactical ballistic missile, North Korea's KCNA news agency reported.
Detailed training was held on "procedures and processes for rapidly moving into a nuclear counterattack position," the agency added.
"The goal of the exercise was achieved and the reliability of the command and mobilization system capable of responding quickly to any nuclear crisis was confirmed," KCNA said.
UN sanctions against Pyongyang over its nuclear program prohibit it from possessing ballistic missiles.
