Germany warned: If they elect a conservative pope...
President of the Central Committee of German Catholics (ZdK) expressed hope that the next pope will continue the legacy of openness followed by Pope Francis, warning that the election of a conservative figure could present challenges for the Church in Germany.

ZdK President Irme Stetter-Karp told DPA that the Church needs a leadership capable of responding to the demands of the 21st century, and the election of a conservative pope, she added, would probably represent a significant challenge for the Catholic Church in Germany.
She warned of the presence of forces within the Catholic Church that want to maintain clerical power and consider too much freedom for believers a threat to the unity of the Church. "That risk exists and it is not small," she said.
The German "Synodal path" and tensions with the Vatican
ZdK, as reported by Index, represents Catholic laity, non-clergy in local parishes. Together with the German Bishops' Conference, the ZdK launched a reform process in 2019, the "Synodal Path".
That process centered on reforms within the Church regarding lay preaching and same-sex couples, moves that have angered conservatives, leading some to speak of schism and heresy.
Polls have repeatedly shown that a majority of German Catholics support liberal reforms, including greater rights for women and a change in the Church's stance on sexual morality.
