She called the tense debate in the White House another sign of a "new merciless era" in today's world.

Baerbock said at the press conference that, like many others, she could not sleep well last night after watching the events in the White House, where Trump harshly criticized Zelensky and claimed that the Ukrainian president is not ready for peace.

"Unfortunately, this was not a bad dream, but a harsh reality," she said.

"This is a relentless time in which we must defend the international order based on rules and the rule of law more than ever against the powers of the strongest," she added.

Baerbock expressed her support for Zelensky's position that any negotiations with Russia should ensure a "just and lasting peace", and not just a temporary ceasefire without security guarantees for Ukraine.

"No one needs peace more than the Ukrainians"

"American diplomatic efforts are of course important, but such a peace must be just and lasting, not just a pause until the next Russian attack," Baerbock said.

"Therefore, no one should be fooled by the enemy: he sits exclusively in the Kremlin, not in Kyiv or Brussels," she continued.

She called on European countries to stand up for international law and defend their interests and to support Ukraine more strongly.

"We Europeans must move forward more strongly than ever before and stand up decisively for our interests and international law - without 'ifs' and 'buts,'" Baerbock said.

"For us, therefore, it is clear: we firmly stand on the side of sovereign and free Ukraine. Ukraine is part of free and democratic Europe," she concluded.
