Will Djokovic preserve his incredible Beijing record?
Novak Djokovic is returning to the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing, 11 years after his last appearance in the Chinese capital.
Djokovic will face Portugal’s Nuno Borges, the world No. 49, no earlier than 1 p.m. this Wednesday.
This is not just another tournament for the Serbian champion.
Djokovic has produced some of the best performances of his career in Beijing, as demonstrated by his incredible record of 29 wins in 29 matches, along with six titles from six appearances.
At a press conference, the Belgrade-born star was very clear about why he decided to compete in Beijing — he wants to give something back to the Chinese fans for all the love they have shown him over the years.
"It’s been a long time since my last appearance — 11 years. I have a very good record here. I’ve always enjoyed playing in Beijing, in China in general, and especially here. I’ve always received tremendous support, and the atmosphere is incredible. During practices and matches, I feel so much love and support from Chinese tennis fans."
"I can’t wait to play again. Sooner or later, I was going to return to Beijing, and I’m glad it happened this year. I arrived a few days early to get in some practice and spend some time on court before the tournament began. I hope to experience those great emotions from the past again and have a fantastic tournament," Djokovic said.
How is Djokovic feeling physically?
The 39-year-old Serbian then addressed his physical condition.
At the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open, Djokovic had experienced problems with a general feeling of weakness and was unable to perform at his best against his opponents.
More concerning than the defeats themselves was the way his body responded during both matches.
"For now, I feel good; we’ll see how things develop. Playing a match is different from any practice session or practice set. So far, everything is fine."
"I couldn’t wait to come to China. The results I’ve achieved here speak for themselves. Knowing that I have this record (29 wins in 29 matches, ed.) gives me the confidence I need right now," Djokovic explained.
