Royal welcome for Norwegians – More than 100,000 "Vikings" took to the streets VIDEO
Norway’s national team was welcomed like champions upon their return from the World Cup, despite finishing the tournament in the quarterfinals.
More than 100,000 fans gathered in Oslo on Monday to welcome their footballers, who were eliminated after a 2–1 extra-time defeat to England.
A large crowd filled the area in front of the Royal Palace in the early afternoon, while the national team received a traditional water salute upon landing in the capital.
The players then took part in a ceremonial parade through Oslo, and before meeting the fans they were received by Norwegian King Harald.
Columns of supporters filled the square in front of the palace and the main street, Karl Johans gate, where the players stepped out onto the balcony and greeted the crowd, while the Royal Guard stood in ceremonial formation behind them.
One of the few who did not attend the final part of the celebration was Erling Haaland. The biggest star of the Norwegian team had left the delegation earlier in order to catch his flight.
