Fire after fire across Serbia: Firefighters make extraordinary efforts; "Super Puma" Helicopter deployed PHOTO

Due to exceptionally prolonged and intense heat wave affecting Serbia, numerous wildfires have broken out across the country. Members of the firefighting units and the Emergency Situations Sector are making extraordinary efforts to bring blazes under control.

The fire that broke out at the Srem–Mačva Regional Landfill has been brought under control thanks to a joint operation by firefighters and employees of the waste management company.

"Five fire engines, five water tankers, and six trucks used to cover the landfill with soil took part in the operation. Work is ongoing to cover the landfill with earth and suppress the smoke plume," the City Administration of Sremska Mitrovica confirmed to the RINA news agency.

Fire also burning along the Kraljevo–Novi Pazar main road

Large wildfires yesterday affected the area between Ušće and Polumir in the Ibar Gorge, where firefighters and rescue teams spent hours battling flames that had spread to several locations. Thick smoke and inaccessible terrain further complicated the intervention.

According to photographs shared on social media, the fire affected a large area, while thick clouds of smoke covered the region. Firefighting teams were deployed on the ground and made major efforts to prevent the further spread of the blaze.

Fires also broke out along the Kraljevo–Novi Pazar main road, and firefighting and rescue teams from Kraljevo, Vrnjačka Banja and Ušće were sent to the scene.

Kraljevo Mayor Predrag Terzić said that teams were battling fires at four locations.

"The fires are burning at four locations between Maglič and Polumir. One is under control, and the others are expected to be brought under control as well. Media reports say that due to the inaccessible and steep terrain, the fire is being fought manually using backpack water pumps, while helicopter support is expected to be deployed during the day.

Assistant Minister and Head of the Emergency Situations Sector of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Luka Čaušić, previously stated that a new fire broke out in the Deliblato Sands on Wednesday at around 2 p.m. and, due to high temperatures and wind, quickly spread across more than 300 hectares.

"More than 80 members of the Emergency Situations Sector, volunteer fire departments and Vojvodinašume are currently taking part in the firefighting operation, while three helicopters of the Ministry of Internal Affairs — the Kamov Ka-32, H215 Super Puma and H145 — have been deployed from the air. We also expect the arrival of heavy machinery to create firebreaks in order to stop the further spread of the fire," Čaušić said, according to a statement from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

According to Interior Minister Ivica Dačić, H145 and H215 Super Puma helicopters are taking part in the firefighting operation, while a Kamov Ka-32 helicopter has also been deployed to further strengthen aerial firefighting efforts.

"Thirty-two firefighters and rescuers from Kovin, Pančevo, Bela Crkva and Vršac are engaged on the ground with 12 vehicles, supported by members of firefighting and rescue units from Belgrade, Zrenjanin and Smederevo. He recalled that the fire broke out on August 2 in the village of Šumarak, in the Deliblato Sands, and that the first fire site was contained on August 3 across an area of around four hectares, while the second was contained across an area of approximately two hectares.

Fire also breaks out near Čačak

A large fire broke out in the village of Rakova near Čačak during the evening hours, affecting around three hectares of meadows and low vegetation.

Seven firefighters and rescuers with four vehicles were immediately sent to the scene.

"The fire was spreading quickly and several buildings were at risk. One woman was injured after inhaling smoke. Emergency medical services were called and she received medical assistance. Two houses and several auxiliary buildings were saved," a source from the scene told RINA.

In addition to firefighters and rescuers, employees of the company Strabag were also present at the scene, providing support with personnel and machinery, as well as police officers. Thanks to the major efforts of the teams on the ground, the fire was successfully extinguished at around 8 p.m.
