Heatwave begins with no end in sight; Extreme temperatures ahead
A new heatwave, forecast by meteorologists to be the most intense of the summer, is set to begin in Serbia on Wednesday. Temperatures will rise day by day, with some parts of the country expected to reach as high as 40°C (104°F) in the shade by early August.
The heatwave could last at least until August 10.
According to the Serbian Hydrometeorological Institute (RHMZ), today will be mostly sunny and warm, with daytime highs ranging from 29°C to 33°C (84°F to 91°F). A brief, isolated shower is possible only in mountainous areas. From Wednesday onward, maximum temperatures are expected to range between 34°C and 38°C (93°F to 100°F).
RHMZ meteorologist Slobodan Sovilj told Kurir that today will be the last day with relatively pleasant summer temperatures before a much warmer air mass arrives in Serbia from the Mediterranean.
"From Friday and at the beginning of August, temperatures will climb to between 35°C and 40°C (95°F to 104°F)," Sovilj said.
He added that the hot spell is expected to persist much longer than is typical for this time of year.

Sweltering nights ahead for Belgrade
"It is almost certain that the heatwave will extend through the first ten days of August and will last at least until August 9 or 10. Even after that, exceptionally high temperatures of 35°C to 40°C (95°F to 104°F) are expected to persist, accompanied by tropical nights when minimum temperatures will range from 20°C to 24°C (68°F to 75°F). In Belgrade, nighttime temperatures will remain around 25°C (77°F)," Sovilj said.
Sovilj emphasized that everyone should exercise caution due to the prolonged period of extremely high temperatures.
Special caution for children, outdoor workers, and the elderly
"This will be the most intense heatwave of the summer so far. Extra caution is advised for children, older adults, people with chronic health conditions, and workers who perform their jobs outdoors. Working hours should be adjusted to the weather conditions, and people should avoid being outside during the hottest part of the day, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
"We also expect conditions to be highly favorable for wildfires. So far, there have been fewer than in previous years, but with no significant rainfall expected during this heatwave, additional caution and preparedness from the relevant authorities will be essential," Sovilj said.
Then come showers and oppressive humidity
For now, he said, there are no signs of any significant cooling.
"Between August 10 and 15, localized instability and brief showers are possible, but without any substantial drop in temperatures. Daytime highs will remain between 30°C and 35°C (86°F to 95°F), accompanied by higher humidity and very muggy conditions. This heatwave will be assigned the highest level of meteorological warning since the beginning of the summer," he said.
How to protect yourself
Doctors advise avoiding direct exposure to the sun during the hottest part of the day. They also recommend wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing, a wide-brimmed hat or cap, and using sunscreen with an appropriate SPF.
It is also essential to drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration and protect your health during periods of extreme heat.
