Fourth day of chaos: Protests spread beyond Tirana; Injuries reported
Students and high school pupils continued their anti-government protests in Albania for the fourth consecutive day. The demonstrations spread from Tirana to several other cities, where clashes broke out with police, who also used tear gas.
In Tirana, young people from the capital and other parts of the country gathered and began marching towards the Ministry of Education, demanding changes in the country and the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
Protests in the capital have continued for the fourth consecutive day, with the previous three days marked by tensions and clashes, according to Albania's Euronews. During today's demonstrations, police reportedly used tear gas against protesters gathered outside the Ministry of Education.
In Korçë, violence escalated during the protests when demonstrators set fire to rubbish bins and dragged them into the street, while some protesters threw stones and other objects at police.
In Lezhë, clashes between protesters and police were reported. According to media reports, one person lost consciousness on the pavement, while two girls were injured in the clashes. Protesters reportedly tore out roadside railings, damaged traffic signs and started a large fire at the entrance to the city, forcing a temporary suspension of traffic.
In Pogradec, young people returned to the city's main boulevard and resumed their protest despite previous detentions and police interventions.
They chanted slogans such as "Rama, resign!" and "Rama to prison, Berisha to prison!", referring to Prime Minister Edi Rama and opposition leader Sali Berisha. Clashes between protesters and police were also reported in Vlora.
In Elbasan, young people, mostly high school students, walked out of classes and took to the streets. In Kamëz, high school students again boycotted classes and attempted to head towards Tirana to join the protests in the capital.
Their march was stopped by police, with an increased number of law enforcement officers deployed at the scene. The demonstrations, which began in Tirana four days ago, spread to other Albanian cities on the second day.
The protests have been marked by tensions, clashes with police, detentions, and damage to public and private property. Dozens of protesters and police officers have been injured in recent days.
