Entire region gripped by ice: Balkans in subzero temperatures VIDEO
In the countries of the region, temperatures were below zero this morning, with snow-covered landscapes and ice everywhere. No new precipitation is expected, and the sun that has appeared in most places is weak and pale.
Drivers are being warned that invisible ice can form on all wet roads, with additional hazards from falling rocks and icicles.
At border crossings in Bosnia and Herzegovina, there have been no delays longer than 30 minutes this morning, although the Izačić crossing toward Croatia is closed to trucks with trailers. The lowest morning temperature recorded in Bosnia and Herzegovina was -14°C, while the highest forecasted daytime temperature is -4°C.
In continental Croatia, the morning was extremely cold. According to DHMZ measurements at 7 a.m., the coldest spot was in Medjimurje, in Štrigova, at -19.7°C. Other cold areas included Lika, Moslavina, Slavonia, the hinterland of Zadar, Karlovac County, and Koprivnica-Križevci County, with recorded temperatures as follows: Gospić -15.6°C, Lekenik -15°C, Gračac -14.8°C, Lički Lešće -14°C, Karlovac -13.6°C, Križevci -13.4°C, Bosiljevo -13.2°C, Plaški -13.1°C, Ogulin -12.7°C, Plitvice Lakes -12.1°C (automatic measurement), Požega -11.8°C. In Zagreb, the temperature dropped to -13°C.
The situation is similar in North Macedonia, where temperatures across most of the country are below zero and are expected to remain so today. The lowest forecasted temperatures range from -15°C to -6°C, while the maximums will be between -4°C and 3°C. Cold weather is expected in the coming days, with cloudy skies and occasional sunny periods. In the western regions, a moderate westerly wind will blow. Minimum temperatures are expected to drop to -14°C.
Cold weather with sunny intervals is expected in Montenegro, except in the northern part of the country, where it will be cloudier and strong frost will persist throughout the day. The highest temperature there is forecasted to reach -1°C.
In the southern and central regions, it will be mostly sunny, with occasional light to moderate cloud cover. Winds will be moderate to strong from the north and northeast, weakening during the day. The maximum temperature is expected to reach up to 7°C.
