Croatia is ready to stab Montenegro in the back: "This is just the tip of the iceberg"
Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Grlić Radman claims that official Zagreb is not blocking Montenegro’s progress in EU accession negotiations, but is instead insisting that it uphold the fundamental principles on which the Union is founded.
“We cannot speak of a blockade. You can see that we have so far agreed to the closure of a number of negotiation chapters,” Grlić Radman said last night in Luxembourg following a meeting of foreign ministers from EU member states.
He said that Montenegro had so far met the technical criteria in the accession process, but that it still needed to fulfill the criteria under the chapters on the Judiciary and Fundamental Rights, and Justice, Freedom and Security.
“We are seeking answers about 14 missing persons, we want war criminals to be prosecuted, and we want to see the return of property seized from Croatians in Montenegro. We know that property has been returned to some other minorities, but not to Croatians, and we consider this discrimination. This is something we insist on, and it is part of negotiation chapters 23 and 24,” Grlić Radman said.
He also stressed the need to pay compensation to former detainees held at the Morinj prison camp, adding that Croatian experts had estimated that Croatian vessels worth $2.7 billion had ended up in Montenegro. He said the school ship Jadran, which Croatia is claiming, was just the tip of the iceberg.
He added that Montenegro had given assurances that progress would be made on outstanding issues, the Croatian daily Jutarnji list reported.
Montenegro closed three more chapters in its EU accession negotiations last night. The number of provisionally closed chapters has risen to 21, with 12 still remaining.
