Vjesnik Tower facing demolition: Moisture complicates situation, Zagreb in mourning
After the fire that severely damaged the Vjesnik Tower, structural engineers are set to release their final assessment of the building’s safety today, with preliminary analyses indicating that the structure is compromised.
A structural engineer from the Croatian Earthquake Engineering Center, Juraj Pojatina, confirmed the poor condition of the building on the Croatian Radio show “U mreži Prvog”.
“What our analyses have shown is that the structural state is extremely compromised, and the recommendation will be to proceed with demolition,” he emphasized.
Pojatina explained that the building is unsafe, with the most critical columns exposed to external elements, which further worsens the situation.
“Moisture penetrating the structural elements causes additional chemical reactions that contribute to the degradation of the concrete itself and a reduction in strength, thus affecting the stability of the entire building,” he highlighted.
City still in chaos
Due to street closures around the tower, and with traffic not yet restored to two lanes, major congestion continues in Zagreb.
