Split Clinical Hospital Center said in a statement that a total of 36 people were admitted to the facility after sustaining injuries in the wildfire.

“Following medical evaluation, 14 patients were hospitalized, while the others were discharged for home care. Seven patients are in the intensive care unit and are in life-threatening condition. Another three patients are being treated in intensive care, while the remaining patients have been admitted to hospital wards,” KBC Split said.

The medical facility added that all available teams were immediately deployed to ensure timely treatment of those injured, and that staff who had been on annual leave were also called in to work shifts.

Omiš Deputy Mayor Ivan Pivčević said that a firefighter with an ear injury was among those injured.

He added that the damage is enormous, with a large number of cars and numerous houses burned down.

Information from the scene is still being gathered, and the full extent of the material damage will only become known once the fire is brought under control and all affected areas can be inspected.

Part of the population evacuated

The fire has threatened numerous homes and buildings, and some residents and tourists have been evacuated.

According to the Croatian news outlet Index, at least 10 people have been injured, two of them seriously.

The mayor of Omiš earlier confirmed that one man with burns was rushed to hospital.

According to the latest information, the fire is now less than 50 meters from the city center.

Firefighters are dousing the roofs of houses with water.

Large steel structures located directly above the city, designed to prevent rocks from falling onto homes, are also engulfed in flames.

Explosions heard

Explosions can be heard across the city, with gas cylinders believed to be exploding.

Firefighters’, ambulances’ and police sirens can be heard constantly.

Most of the city is without electricity.

Dozens of vehicles have been burned on the Adriatic Highway, and houses have also been damaged.

Traffic has been suspended on that section of the road.

Firefighters from across Croatia, along with Canadair firefighting aircraft, are battling the blaze, but strong winds are hampering firefighting efforts.
