Snap Parliamentary Elections set for October 25

Vučić has signed the Decree dissolving the National Assembly of Serbia and the decision to call an early parliamentary election, which will be held on October 25.

The decree states that he is dissolving the National Assembly elected on December 17, 2023, based on the reasoned proposal submitted by the Government of Serbia on September 7.

Addressing the public from the Palace of Serbia, President Vučić said the decree will take effect on the day it is published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia.

Vučić also signed the decision to call the election for members of parliament on October 25, 2026. He said the electoral deadlines will begin to run from the day the decision takes effect.

“The parliamentary elections will be conducted by the bodies responsible for administering elections, in accordance with the provisions of the Law on the Election of Members of Parliament,” the Serbian president said.

At the beginning of his address from the Palace of Serbia, he also referred to the turbulent geopolitical situation, stressing that Serbia had managed to maintain stability and run its economy in a way that made it the fastest-growing economy in Europe.

He said Serbia had also faced a difficult political situation over the past year and a half, which was not merely a conflict between opposing political actors, as there had also been external interference.

Vučić recalled that he had repeatedly called for dialogue among all sides, but also stressed that it was difficult to engage in talks with those undermining the country’s constitutional order. In that context, he said, Serbia was moving toward an early parliamentary election.

“Whoever I asked—and I asked many people, and everyone offered different answers—the decision-making process is not always simple,” Vučić said, adding that he had always been guided by the vital interests of citizens.

“Do we need elections?” Vučić asked, adding that “they would not be necessary if there were not so many political tensions,” especially as the country is also preparing for EXPO 2027.

He said the elections would leave enough time for the government to continue working afterward and complete everything that needs to be done.

“Citizens, you will have the opportunity to choose between, certainly, several options. I ask you to conduct this election peacefully, and I do not mean only election day but all 45 days. It is important that we respect different political opinions, expression and assembly,” Vučić said.

“Please think carefully about who you give your vote to, given the gravity of the global political situation and all its implications for Serbia. I am confident that you will choose the right future. Whoever you choose will have my congratulations, because the most important thing is preserving our country, society and family,” the Serbian president said.
