Prosecutors seek detention of RHMZ Director and two other suspects
The director of the State Hydrometeorological Institute of Serbia (RHMZ), Jugoslav N. (71), as well as Olga N. (71) and Djordje N. (45), were questioned before the Special Department for Combating Corruption of the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade
Following the questioning, the prosecution proposed that the pre-trial judge of the Higher Court in Belgrade order detention for the suspects.
They were questioned on suspicion that, between November 2019 and November 2024, in Belgrade, Čačak, Užice, Bajina Bašta and Montenegro, they transferred and converted assets worth at least €650,000, knowing that the assets originated from criminal activity and intending to conceal their illegal origin, the prosecutor's office said in a statement.
According to the statement, the suspects remained silent during questioning, exercising their legal right not to present a defence.
Following the questioning, the prosecution proposed that the pre-trial judge of the Higher Court in Belgrade order the suspects' detention due to the risk of flight, the possibility of influencing witnesses and the risk of committing another criminal offence within a short period.
All the suspects are charged with money laundering, while Jugoslav N. is also charged with failing to declare assets and income or providing false information about assets and income, under Article 101 of the Law on the Prevention of Corruption.
Jugoslav N. is suspected of having made cash deposits totalling 41,878,195 dinars, €43,150 and 44,760 Swiss francs into his bank accounts during the aforementioned period, despite having no declared income to account for the funds. He is also suspected of purchasing real estate in Belgrade, Užice and Montenegro.
Furthermore, regarding the aforementioned increase in his assets, he failed to submit reports on significant changes in his property holdings to the Agency for the Prevention of Corruption, despite being required to do so under Article 69 of the Law on the Prevention of Corruption in his capacity as a public official and director of the RHMZ.
Olga N. is suspected of having transferred at least €227,548 between June 2021 and 2023, funds for which no lawful source of income has been established, to finance the purchase of several properties, including apartments, a parking space and commercial premises in Čačak and Montenegro.
Djordje N. is suspected of having transferred at least 1.5 million dinars in June 2021 to purchase an apartment in Montenegro.
There are also grounds for suspicion that Jugoslav N. and Olga N. transferred assets on November 22, 2024, in Čačak, and on November 28, 2024, in Montenegro, knowing that the assets originated from criminal activity and intending to conceal their illegal origin.
According to the allegations, they signed a lifetime property transfer and distribution agreement before a public notary in Čačak, transferring to Djordje N. all their ownership rights to several apartments, parking spaces and cadastral plots, as well as one commercial property.
