RHMZ Director arrested on suspicion of money laundering; Suspected of transferring assets worth €650,000
Director of Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia (RHMZ), J.N. (71), along with O.N. (71) and Dj.N. (45), have been arrested on suspicion of laundering money and concealing its origins between November 2019 and November 2024.
According to the suspicions, the three individuals transferred and converted assets worth at least 650,000 euros in Belgrade, Čačak, Užice, Bajina Bašta and Montenegro, knowing that the assets originated from criminal activity.
According to the Prosecutor's Office, during that period, J. N. deposited cash totalling 41,878,195 dinars, 43,150 euros and 44,760 Swiss francs into his bank accounts, without being able to account for the funds through his declared income.
He is also suspected of purchasing real estate in Belgrade, Užice and Montenegro without reporting a significant increase in his assets to the Anti-Corruption Agency, despite being legally required to do so as a public official.
O. N. is suspected of transferring at least 227,548 euros between June 2021 and 2023, funds whose origins could not be traced to lawful income, for the purpose of purchasing several apartments, a parking space and commercial premises in Čačak and Montenegro.
Dj. N. is suspected of transferring at least 1.5 million dinars in June 2021 to purchase an apartment in Montenegro.
The Prosecutor's Office also stated that, in November 2024, J. N. and O. N. signed agreements transferring ownership rights to Đ. N. over several apartments, parking spaces, cadastral plots and a commercial property in Čačak and Montenegro. They are suspected of having done so in an attempt to conceal the illegal origins of the assets.
All three suspects are charged with money laundering, while J. N. also faces charges of failing to declare assets and income, or providing false information about his assets and income.
They have been placed in police custody for up to 48 hours and will be brought before the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade for questioning within that period.
