Earlier this year, Greece's Government Council for National Security (KYSEA) gave preliminary approval to the project, and on Thursday it also approved the procurement contracts, Defense Minister Nikos Dendias said.

Greece plans to establish a layered defense system against ballistic missiles, aerial threats, and drones, known as the "Achilles' Shield." The core of the system will consist of Israeli radars and missile systems produced by Rafael and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).

"The system will be ready and fully operational within 35 months," Dendias said.

He added that Greek companies will manufacture at least 25 percent of the system's components.

Greece currently relies on U.S.-made Patriot systems and older Russian S-300 systems to protect its airspace.

The country plans to invest around €28 billion in the modernization of its armed forces by 2036.
