The DS has officially submitted the candidacy of its leader Boris Tadic to the Republic Electoral Commission (RIK). Tadic's candidacy, which is backed by the signatures of 18,903 voters, was handed over by the Democratic Party's authorized representative Boris Rankovic. The Radicals will hold their first big campaign rally on December 24, in Kragujevac, while the campaign slogan will be "From the heart," Radical general secretary Aleksandar Vucic said yesterday, Beta reported. Vucic told a news conference that the Radicals expected to win the presidential vote and that they would not settle for winning a large number of votes in the first round. Istvan Pastor, head of the League of Vojvodina Hungarians, and Milutin Mrkonjic, an official of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), have also announced they would run for president. New Serbia party leader Velimir Ilic had announced earlier that he would be a presidential candidate. However, yesterday, his party said its steering committee would meet on December 23, in Cacak, to decide whether to take part in the ballot. The deadline for submitting candidacies expires at midnight on December 30. Also on Thursday, the Electoral Commission ruled to allow observers from the Center for Free Elections and Democracy (CeSid) to monitor the presidential election, to be held on January 20, 2008.
