Labor and Social Policies Minister Rasim Ljajic said that the social concern this year will be shifted towards making sure that “no one is hungry in Serbia”. Ljajic said that special attention needs to be paid to day care centers, the work of shelters, soup kitchens and help for elderly citizens. Plans to help vulnerable population The minister said that attention will also be given to retirement homes in cities and villages, and announced help for children with various disablities. Ljajic, Valjevo Mayor Zoran Jakovljevic and an official of the Budimir Kostic Humanitarian Fund, Katarina Gaborovic, signed a contract in the western Serbian town for the donation of EUR 30,000 worth of construction and equipment for a shelter for children with disabilities, which should be completed by August 1. The minister told reporters that new soup kitchens would receive assistance, meant to help ten percent of the country's population of some 125,000 people over the age of 65, who live in dire poverty. There are currently 58 such kitchens in Serbia in which some 21,000 receive one meal a day. While more are needed, the economic crisis is hampering the efforts, he said, but added that a deal could be made with the Valjevo city government to open another kitchen there that was closed several years ago. The signing of the agreement was attended by officials of the Raiffeisen Bank Serbia representative Oliver Roegl. The Austrian banks' Serbian operation participated in this humanitarian campaign.
