One of the Serbian police (MUP) elite units, the Gendarmerie, is this Tuesday marking its day. Interior Minister Ivica Dacic attended the ceremonies at the unit's Belgrade HQ, to say that Serbia and her citizens must have confidence in their police force, and that Gendarmes are entrusted with standing with the citizens in defending order, peace, and the country's internal security. Dacic attends Gendarmerie celebration He reminded that the police are tasked with defending public order and peace, defending the country against terrorism, but also with enabling Serbia to develop as a democratic society with guaranteed human rights and freedoms. The interior minister, who is also first deputy premier in the Cvetkovic cabinet, told Gendarmerie officers gathered that the tasks put before them demand that the unit is trained and equipped according to high standards. The unit must also have confidence in those who give them their orders, and must trust that the state will stand behind them. Dacic reminded that the Gendarmerie performed many difficult assignments and that its members lost their lives defending the country, preserving peace and fighting crime. It is an obligation for the police, he continued, to guard their memory and help their families. Dacic also said he supports an idea to build a memorial dedicated to all police officers who gave their lives while performing tasks in the interest of the state and its citizens. The minister also promised his ministry will fight to improve the status of the MUP officers. Deputy Gendarmerie Commander Srdjan Grekulovic presented Dacic with a medallion as a sign of gratitude for the support the unit received from the minister. Grekulovic said that the Gendarmerie is a unit that "all of Serbia can count on, always ready to live up to its tasks". The Serbian Gendarmerie (Zandarmerija) was formed in 1860. Disbanded after the Second World War, the unit was reestablished in 2001. Dacic at the Gendarmerie HQ today (Tanjug)
