In Serbia, only 15% of waste is recycled, putting the country at the foot of the European table, writes daily Novosti. With the adoption of two key laws governing this area—the Law on Waste Management and the Law on Packaging Waste—the Environment and Spatial Planning Ministry plans to form a brand new economic sector in Serbia which, via the collection and separation of waste, its recycling and return to production, will not only create a large number of new jobs but generate a significant profit. Environment Ministry to promote recycling The new legal acts will encourage private sector participation in the area, help educate citizens on the value of gathering and separating waste, and encourage communal enterprises to cut the costs of their services by getting involved in these projects. Recycling is an excellent way to save both money and energy—for example, one recycled glass bottle saves as much energy as is required to keep a computer working for 26 minutes.
