She will now meet defending champion Serena Williams whom she lost to in the fourth round last year. Jankovic through to quarter-finals Jankovic, for whom reaching the Australian Open quarter-finals represents her best performance so far in Melbourne, has a record of two victories and two defeats against the seventh seed. In the fourth round, Williams knocked out 12th seed Nicole Vaidisova 2:0 (6:3 6:4). “I was injured before the tournament, so I’m very happy that I’ve got to the quarter-finals,“ Jankovic said right after her match with home favorite, Dellacqua. The Serb certainly did not have it all her own way and was helped to a great degree by her opponent’s mistakes, who, in the previous round, had eliminated former world no.1, Amelie Mauresmo. Jankovic, currently no.4 on the WTA list, led 5-2 in the first set and spurned three set points, before missing a further opportunity in game 10. She eventually won the first set on a tie-break relatively comfortably, 7-3. However, the Serb was much more convincing in the second set, racing to a 3-0 lead, and despite a mini-comeback by the Australian who had a point to bring it back to 3-2, she finished off the match without much further ado, winning the set 6:1. In the doubles meanwhile, second seeds Nenad Zimonjic and Canadian Daniel Nestor are through to the fourth round after beating the Dutch/German pair Kas and Wassen 2:0 (6:4 6:4).
