New Serbia (NS) said that the person who attacked party leader Velimir Ilic is a “regime sympathizer.” The party also called on the authorities to give information on the motive behind the attack, stating that it was a planned incident. NS: Ilic’s attacker “regime sympathizer” “How is it possible that the attacker, known earlier by the police, with a tattoo of one of the presidents of the Democratic Party, in front of 300 citizens, several uniformed police officers and media, can brutally attack Velimir Ilic?” NS asked in its statement. NS called on the state public prosecution to give answers on what it will be doing against citizens who are openly calling for violence on the internet and whether the state can guarantee security and freedom for NS officials and citizens. “New Serbia will not allow hypocritical behavior of the government, which is unsuccessfully trying to, through various media, condemn Velimir Ilic for the attack, instead of the attacker,” the party stated, asking whether the same would happen if someone from the ruling coalition was attacked. Ilic was attacked on Friday in downtown Belgrade. Police have arrested the attacker and Ilic is currently recovering at home after being released from the hospital on Saturday.
