Prosecution to decide whether to charge policeman

The Belgrade District Court has completed its investigation against police officer Miljan Raičević, suspected of killing Đorđe Zarić (24).

The Belgrade District Court has completed its investigation against police officer Miljan Raicevic, suspected of killing Djordje Zaric (24). Court spokeswoman Ivana Ramic said that the case had been passed to the prosecution for further procedure. The prosecution has a fortnight to bring charges against Raicevic, seek a further investigation or drop the inquiry. Raicevic is accused of killing Zaric during a police search in the early hours of March 19 in New Belgrade. Zaric was struck in the head, and he died on the scene. Doctors pronounced death at 04:30 CET. The victim’s girlfriend arrived on the scene soon after to inform police that they had been returning from a Belgrade nightspot and that she had driven his car because he had been over the drink-drive limit. Zaric had got into a friend’s car, who had also been over the legal limit. The police and Raicevic say that Zaric resisted when the police officer tried to pull him out of the car, and that the gun went off in the ensuing struggle. The victim’s family and friends say that Zaric had put up no resistance on that fateful night and that the police officer had shot him deliberately.
