National Bank of Serbia (NBS) Governor Dejan Soskic says it would be useful for Serbia to close a new arrangement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This would help Serbia's economy become more export-oriented, he said on the day it was announced that the last review of the ongoing loan arrangement was completed successfully. C. bank chief: New arrangement with IMF useful At a news conference, Soskic expressed belief that a new arrangement with the IMF would make it easier for Serbia to accomplish its goal of strengthening its economy and preserving its good reputation on the international market. The IMF would be able to provide valuable assistance to Serbia in the implementation of structural reforms and the funds from the new arrangement with the IMF would be important in ensuring stability in the country in case a disturbance hits the international environment, the governor said. Soskic pointed out that after withdrawing a part of the last IMF credit tranche, Serbia would try not to overstep the 300 per cent limit with the IMF as this would mean that the country would have to pay back the loan under far less favorable terms. Soskic reminded that the IMF program in Serbia helped the country get through the period of crisis with less instability and with a smaller GDP loss and also made it easier for Serbia to earn a much stable reputation in international circles.
