Foreign remittances total between EUR 3 and 5bn annually, equaling some of the biggest investments in the country, says PKS President Milos Bugarin. He said that these funds should not end up as part of public spending but should rather be directed to production, development of new projects and opening of new jobs. “Diaspora should invest more in Serbia” At a session of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce Business Council for the Diaspora, Bugarin called on representatives of the Diaspora to invest in Serbia, pointing out that Serbia would welcome all funds its Diaspora cares to invest in the mother country. “Serbian businessmen in the Diaspora should recognize Serbia as one of investment destinations, and knowledge, experience and respect they have earned in the countries they currently live in bears considerable importance for Serbia's economic development,” he underscored. Assistant Minister for the Diaspora Djordjo Prstojevic said that the ministry, in cooperation with the PKS and the Permanent Conference of Municipalities and Cities, had prepared a catalogue listing 193 projects on potential investment sites in Serbia. “This is the first time that all investment projects that Serbia can offer have been compiled and presented in a single document,” he added. Prstojevic stated that around 40 percent of the listed projects referred to investments in tourism, while investments in the fully equipped industrial zones constituted another 20 percent. “We also have (projects aimed at) investments in agriculture and healthy food sector, which is very important for Serbia as a country that focuses on agricultural production,” he pointed out. Prstojevic said that the catalogue was presented in the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, and that it should also be promoted in other major centers of the Serbian Diaspora in Canada, the U.S. and in Europe, including countries such as Switzerland, Germany and France. The catalogue was also presented in China during the visit of Serbian Minister of the Diaspora Srdjan Sreckovic to the country.
