The three-day Business Forum in Kopaonik, attended by the highest state officials and leading economic experts, finishes today. The three-day event saw discussions and proposals for weathering the negative repercussions of the world economic crisis in Serbia. Last day of Business Forum The main theme on the closing day was “Competitiveness and Controlling Monopolies”, with state representatives and economists offering their solutions to the problem of how to increase the Serbian economy’s competitiveness in a time of economic crisis. One of the main messages from the Kopaonik forum was delivered by Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic, who warned against salary and pension cuts, as that would decrease buying power and demand for domestic products. The prime minister’s advisor, economist Jurij Bajec, said that it was now clear that Serbia had been hit by the recession and that it would be necessary to join forces to mitigate the effects of the economic crisis. “Now the crisis is definitely showing its might, we saw the consequences of that in January and February. I think in that sense, the only agreement is for the government to work together, for the National Bank of Serbia to cooperate with fiscal policies and with the Ministry of Finance. That means we will have to find one model for currency exchange and the new budget to satisfy the needs that are currently most important, which means not endangering the lives of the most vulnerable, safeguarding jobs, and, meanwhile, finding a way to produce something,” said Bajec.
