Average wages down almost 18 pct

Average earnings before tax and contributions in Serbia last month amounted to some EUR 289 (RSD 28,877), down 17.9 percent in real value from December. The Statistical Office says that, in comparison to January 2008, average net earnings in the same month this year were higher by 13.8 percent in nominal value and by 3.8 percent in real value. Compared to January 2008, average gross salaries in the same month this year were 14.1 percent higher in nominal value, and 4.1 percent higher in real value. From January 2009 the Statistical Office widened its circle of units it monitors to calculate average earnings. In addition to wages paid to those employed by legal entities (economic societies, companies, foundations, associations and other organizations), they looked at those employed by entrepreneurs.

The average gross salaries in Serbia for January 2009 is EUR 403, which is 15.9 percent lower in nominal value than in December 2008, and 17.9 percent lower in real value.

Compared to January 2008, average gross salaries in the same month this year were 14.1 percent higher in nominal value, and 4.1 percent higher in real value.

From January 2009 the Statistical Office widened its circle of units it monitors to calculate average earnings.

In addition to wages paid to those employed by legal entities (economic societies, companies, foundations, associations and other organizations), they looked at those employed by entrepreneurs.
