The National Competition Council has discussed measures to increase competition in the face of the global financial crisis. The Council was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic, and was also attended by European Commissioner for Industry and Enterprise Gunter Verheugen and the chief economist from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), who presented the bank’s report on Serbian transition in 2008. National Competition Council convenes After the meeting, Djelic announced that Serbia had taken the biggest strides in the area of reform, according to the EBRD report. The minister said that the EU would allocate a further EUR 620mn in loans for South-East European countries because of the financial crisis, though it was still unclear how much Serbia would receive. It was certain, he said, that the money would be used to stabilize the financial sector, provide energy efficiency and finance infrastructure projects. The government formed the National Competition Council in February 2008 with the goal of drafting and proposing an industry competition strategy, and bolstering cooperation in the field of competition enhancement and with international institutions. After the meeting, Đelić announced that Serbia had taken the biggest strides in the area of reform, according to the EBRD report.
