The deputy prime minister believes that the number of people working in the state governance should be lower. Bozidar Djelic says a model for this could be an agreement reached between the government and the judiciary unions. Djelic: Reduce state administration "The judiciary unions acted bravely and agreed to reduce the number of employees, while the government decided to channel the funds gained in this way to those who carry the greatest burden of work [within the judiciary]," Djelic told Blic daily Saturday. He stressed that a reduction of the state apparatus was necessary, and added that Serbia spends 10 percent of its GDP in order to pay the administration employees, while in neighboring Bulgaria, for example, this number is at 3.5 percent. The newspaper also reported that, not counting MUP, BIA and the Army, the state administration wages costs Serbian tax payers RSD 42bn – some EUR 506mn – per year. On top of this, the government that was sworn in this spring in the meanwhile employed 500 more people in the sector. The number of those working in the state administration has thus in September risen to 27,892, from 27,394 in December last year – the figures exclude police and military personnel.
