More than 1.5 million foreign pilgrims to Mecca
More than 1.5 million foreign pilgrims have arrived in the Muslim holy city of Mecca ahead of the start of the hajj this week, Saudi officials said.
The vast majority of pilgrims arrived by air from all over the world, AP reported. More are expected to come, and hundreds of thousands of Saudis and others living in Saudi Arabia will join them when the pilgrimage officially begins on Friday, June 14.
According to the expectations of Saudi officials, more pilgrims will come to the country this year than in 2023, when there were more than 1.8 million.
This brings the Hajj closer to the level of the time before the pandemic. More than 2.4 million Muslims came to Mecca in 2019.
Among the pilgrims this year are 4,200 Palestinians from the occupied West Bank, who arrived in Mecca earlier this month, the Palestinian Ministry of Religious Affairs announced.
Palestinians from the Gaza Strip could not travel to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj this year because of the war between Israel and Hamas.
