Explosion in Germany: People missing and injured; Massive crater opens as building threatens to collapse PHOTO
Four people were injured, some of them seriously, in an explosion that rocked a residential building in Regensburg, southern Germany, today, while two people remain missing, German police said.
The explosion severely damaged the building’s façade, leaving a large hole in the exterior wall, Der Spiegel reported.
Police have not ruled out a gas leak as the possible cause of the explosion, but no official information has yet confirmed what triggered it.
According to police, the two missing people may be inside the severely damaged building, which rescue teams have so far been unable to enter due to the risk of collapse.
A major rescue operation continued at the scene throughout the afternoon.
The German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) has been deployed to stabilize the building, and police expect that it will only be possible to enter the structure and begin searching for the missing people tomorrow.
The explosion also triggered a fire, and according to preliminary police reports, four apartments sustained direct damage.
One police officer was temporarily hospitalized due to smoke inhalation.
As a precaution, two neighboring residential buildings were also evacuated due to the danger and the ongoing emergency response. Their residents have not yet been allowed to return.
The Regensburg city administration announced that it would provide assistance to the evacuated residents.
