A plan to tear the EU apart is ready - Is Germany preparing to leave the EU?
Germany’s right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has drawn up a plan for a radical overhaul of the EU that would lead to a referendum on Germany’s withdrawal from the bloc if the proposed reforms fail, The Telegraph reports.
AfD leader Alice Weidel has openly declared that she wants to turn the EU into a loose alliance of sovereign states if her party ousts Chancellor Friedrich Merz and comes to power.
“The EU is no longer a community of sovereign states. Decisions must once again be made by national parliaments and governments,” Weidel said at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
The plan she presented is so radical that, in practice, it would mean the complete dismantling of the current union, prompting officials in Brussels to immediately reject it as unacceptable.
Abolishing European elections and the Court in Luxembourg
The AfD is calling for a drastic reduction in the size of the European Commission and the transfer of its key powers to national leaders. The party also wants to abolish the European Court of Justice and replace it with an arbitration tribunal, end direct elections to the European Parliament, and grant every member state a veto right and exemptions from EU regulations.
Its platform also includes reducing Germany’s contributions to the EU budget, scrapping green policies, lifting the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars, and withdrawing Germany from the Schengen Area if the bloc’s external borders cannot be adequately secured.
“Alice is in Wonderland. You can no longer win elections by talking about leaving,” an unnamed European official told The Telegraph, describing the AfD as the “Alternative Reality for Germany.”
Weidel calls for an end to aid to Ukraine
In its official document, the AfD openly states that if Brussels rejects its demands, it will offer German voters a referendum on “Dexit.”
Although polls show that 82 percent of Germans still want to remain in the EU, the AfD hopes that pressure could force European institutions to make concessions.
Speaking in Strasbourg, Weidel also claimed that Brussels was effectively “plundering Germany” and called for an immediate halt to European aid to Ukraine, arguing that peace negotiations should be left to the United States, Russia and China.
Opposition politicians in Berlin immediately warned that weakening the European order would directly benefit Vladimir Putin and threaten Germany’s security and economy.
“The AfD’s ties to Putin are undermining trust among allies”
“The AfD’s hostility toward the EU threatens our security and prosperity, while its closeness to Putin is undermining trust among our allies,” warned David McAllister, a member of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs.
Implementing the AfD’s reforms would require amending the EU’s founding treaties, which would necessitate the unanimous consent of all 27 member states.
Former British Europe Minister Sir David Lidington described the AfD’s strategy as absurd, recalling former Prime Minister David Cameron’s failed attempt to pressure Brussels into making concessions through similar ultimatums ahead of Brexit.
Seeking Allies Among Europe’s Right-Wing Parties
The AfD, currently Germany’s leading party in opinion polls following victories in state elections, is seeking allies among other European right-wing parties.
Although many share the idea of a “Europe of nations,” deep divisions remain over the war in Ukraine. Some, including Marine Le Pen, have distanced themselves from the AfD for years amid allegations of extremism.
Experts and former party members point out that if Weidel comes to power, she could find herself confronted with political realities and be forced to moderate her rhetoric, following the example of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
However, even an attempt to issue an ultimatum to Brussels amid political instability in Europe could trigger the deepest crisis in the history of the European Union.
