Co-leader of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), Alice Weidel, said that if her party enters federal government, it would seek Germany’s withdrawal from the eurozone and Schengen Area, closure of national borders, and a significantly tougher migration policy.

“Germany was significantly better off before the introduction of the euro,” Weidel said in an interview with ZDF that aired on Sunday.

According to her, the common European currency weakened the German economy and reduced household wealth.

“We will close the borders and leave Schengen”

Speaking about migration, Weidel announced plans to close Germany’s borders and leave the Schengen Area.

“We will close them, and we will leave Schengen,” she said.

She also called for more deportations and fewer naturalizations, including the return of Syrians whose protection status is no longer valid. 

 

Weidel also criticized Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s CDU and SPD Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil, once again attacking the CDU for refusing to cooperate with the AfD.

“We will govern in the first federal states. And we will also govern at the federal level,” she said.

Ahead of the September 6 election in Saxony-Anhalt, the AfD is polling at more than 40 percent, according to recent surveys. One Infratest dimap poll puts the party at 41 percent, compared with 24 percent for the CDU.

Nationwide, the AfD is polling at 27 percent, ahead of the CDU/CSU at 22 percent, according to the latest ZDF Politbarometer.

The latest ZDF survey also shows the AfD in a strong position ahead of September’s elections in eastern Germany. However, 64 percent of respondents oppose an AfD-led state government in eastern Germany, while 23 percent support one.

Weidel also again rejected the planned phase-out of new cars with internal-combustion engines, as well as measures aimed at reducing the effects of human-caused climate change.

Index notes that Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) classified the AfD as a confirmed far-right extremist organization in May 2025.

However, in February this year, the Cologne Administrative Court temporarily barred the BfV from labeling and treating the AfD as such pending a final ruling in the main proceedings. The court said there remained strong indications of anti-constitutional tendencies within the party, but that it had not yet been sufficiently established that these tendencies characterized the AfD as a whole.
