Has Flávio Bolsonaro fled the country?
Brazil’s Federal Police have contacted Argentine authorities to verify reports that Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who was defeated in the presidential election, had left Brazil by crossing the border into Argentina and was planning to board a private jet.
The Argentine government, however, has denied that Bolsonaro entered its territory, and there is no confirmation that he has left Brazil.
The suspicion was raised by Argentine newspaper Infobae, which reported an alleged border crossing using a false identity. According to the publication, Flávio had supposedly traveled to Puerto Iguazú, in Misiones Province, from where he was expected to board a private jet to the United States.
The report prompted Brazilian authorities to take action, given that a court ruling prohibits the senator from leaving the country. Sources within the Federal Police confirmed that they had contacted Argentine authorities to verify whether the politician had potentially left Brazil.
According to information obtained by Brazilian media outlet Jovem Pan, there is currently no record indicating that he passed through any official Brazilian border crossing.
In a statement to Bloomberg, Argentine presidential spokesperson Fabián Fernández said that Flávio Bolsonaro had not entered Argentine territory. He also denied that an aircraft matching the description circulated by local media had departed for the United States.
The statement contradicts the account published by Infobae, which reported that the politician had crossed the border and was preparing to leave Argentina on a private jet. Senator Rogério Marinho, coordinator of Bolsonaro’s campaign, also denied the reports. According to media accounts, Argentine police had been contacted in the early hours of the morning but provided no concrete evidence that the Brazilian senator had entered the country.
Three other people were supposed to accompany him
Infobae reported that the flight was scheduled to depart from Puerto Iguazú at 2 a.m. local time on Tuesday. The newspaper identified the aircraft as a Gulfstream G400, registration number LV-JQW, owned by Baires Fly. According to the Argentine publication, the airline had requested customs and immigration clearance for four passengers and three crew members. However, this information does not establish that Flávio was among the passengers or that the flight took place at all.
There is currently no official confirmation that he crossed the border or boarded the aircraft mentioned in the reports. The suspicions emerged after Flávio Bolsonaro announced on Monday, October 26, that he had been ordered to surrender his passports to the Federal Police. The measure was ordered by Supreme Federal Court (STF) Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who also prohibited the senator from leaving Brazil.
The decision was issued on Sunday evening, following Bolsonaro’s defeat by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the second round of the presidential election. The order gave him 24 hours to surrender both his regular and diplomatic passports. Flávio was also prohibited from contacting lawyer Willer Tomaz, who is involved in the same investigation.
In a video posted on social media on Monday, the senator said he would comply with the court order but would also challenge the decision itself.
“I will surrender my passports and defend myself against this absurdity, which is a clear attempt to intimidate me,” he said.
On Friday, former congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, the senator’s brother, suggested during an appearance on an American podcast that Flávio should leave Brazil if he lost the election. The statement was subsequently linked to reports of the senator’s alleged departure from Brazil. Nevertheless, as of today, there is no evidence that he followed this suggestion or traveled abroad.
