Russian bombers cause chaos; Fighter jets scrambled in emergency response (VIDEO)
Tu-22M3 long-range bombers of the Russian Aerospace Forces conducted a scheduled flight over the neutral waters of the Baltic Sea, Russia's Ministry of Defence announced today.
"Fighter escort was provided by crews operating Su-35S and Su-30SM aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces. The flight lasted more than four hours," the Russian Ministry of Defence said in a statement, Interfax reported.
According to the ministry, during certain stages of the route, the long-range bombers were escorted by fighter jets from foreign countries.
At the end of September, Lithuania's Ministry of Defence announced that, within just one week, fighter jets assigned to the NATO air policing mission in the Baltic states had been scrambled six times to identify and escort Russian military aircraft that had violated flight rules.
As reported at the time, all Russian aircraft were flying without flight plans and with their transponders switched off.
