The car-sized, six-wheeled rover was sent to Mars as part of a mission aimed at determining whether conditions suitable for microbial life ever existed on the planet, Reuters reported.

“The engineering hardware and instruments aboard the Perseverance rover are in excellent condition, and all backup systems remain available, even though they are nearly five years old,” said Steven Lee of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California.

NASA credited the success of the Perseverance rover largely to its ability to navigate independently, thanks to an autonomous navigation system known as AutoNav.

“Perseverance takes stereo images of the terrain ahead, generates a 3D digital map and selects the safest route to its driving destination,” Lee explained.

The rover has surpassed the previous record of 28.06 miles (45 kilometers), set by NASA’s Opportunity rover, which traversed the Martian surface between 2004 and 2018.

The rover’s original mission called for it to travel just 12.4 miles (20 kilometers).

NASA recently approved an extension of the rover’s mission to explore the rim of the crater, with operations expected to continue until approximately the end of 2028.

Perseverance has been focusing on Jezero Crater, an area in Mars’s northern hemisphere that is believed to have once been filled with water and to have served as a lake basin billions of years ago.
