Violence erupts in France: Student opens fire on principal and teacher with shotgun VIDEO
The principal and a teacher at a school in the town of Aubagne, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department of southern France, sustained gunshot wounds in an armed attack today. A 14-year-old student is suspected of carrying out the attack.
They were wounded outside Joseph Lakanal School in Aubagne after a student fired shots from a 9mm handgun and a shotgun, Le Figaro reports.
Shortly afterward, the suspect was arrested, while the injured principal and teacher were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds.
“He fired four or five shots and was arrested shortly after the attack,” local police confirmed.
The shooting took place as high school students across France are holding protests over dissatisfaction with the state of the education system and school conditions.
Protests are continuing today, with students expected to block schools, as they have in recent weeks, demanding better educational conditions, French media report.
Riot police have been deployed near schools in Mérignac, in the Gironde department, BFM TV reported.
Teaching staff are gradually allowing students into the school, while around a dozen high school students set rubbish bins on fire.
One resident unsuccessfully attempted to intervene with a fire extinguisher before firefighters arrived.
Since the start of the high school student protests, several hundred people have been detained in the capital, with 273 remaining in custody.
Of those, 188 are minors (63%), and most are 15 or 16 years old.
Minister of National Education Édouard Geffray announced that he would visit the education authority in Lille later today.
Government spokesperson Maud Bregeon announced that the deployment of substitute teachers began this morning.
High school student protests in France began in mid-September.
The students' main demands include better learning and educational conditions, as well as solutions to problems with school timetables and resources.
