Russian attacks on energy infrastructure on Thursday and Friday caused widespread power outages in Kyiv. Metro services and tram operations were suspended, while water pumps also shut down.
According to The Kyiv Independent, four people were killed and at least 19 injured in drone attacks on the Ukrainian capital during the morning hours alone.
“One of the energy facilities vital to Kyiv was attacked. Energy workers are doing everything they can to restore electricity supplies as quickly as possible,” Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said.
The voltage drop halted metro trains and escalators, while other forms of public transport in Kyiv were also affected.
Residents are seeking alternative means of transport, causing massive traffic congestion as the city comes under attack from Russian drones and ballistic missiles.
Water pumps also shut down, leaving Kyiv residents without running water.
They were restarted at around 9 p.m. last night, but authorities warned that it would take time for water pressure to return to normal. However, reports emerged this morning that the entire system had shut down again due to another power outage.
Ukrenergo announced electricity consumption restrictions in Kyiv’s residential districts for Friday.
Amid the situation in Kyiv, which has been under relentless, intensified Russian attacks for days, Mayor Vitalii Klitschko issued an urgent appeal to residents to temporarily leave the city, clarifying that he was not calling for a full evacuation.
He said that life in Kyiv had become a matter of survival and advised residents who have friends or relatives outside the capital to consider temporarily relocating, France 24 reports.
“Every day brings new reports of destroyed buildings, injured people or deaths as the shelling of our city intensifies. Today, it is about survival,” Klitschko said.
