Local prefect François-Xavier Lauch told reporters, according to the French newspaper La Voix du Nord, that an investigation into the incident had been launched.

The incident occurred as nearly 500 schools are expected to be fully or partially closed following student protests across the country over dilapidated schools and classrooms, overcrowding and a shortage of teachers, ahead of a nationwide day of protests on Tuesday.

Protests in France

The protests began in late September at a high school in a Paris suburb over a lack of teachers and have since spread across the country.

“Our priority is to restore order,” government spokesperson Maud Bregeon told CNews on Monday.

Education Minister Édouard Geffray said that 24 schools have been set on fire or looted since the protests began, while 78 teachers have been injured. Some of the most violent footage to emerge from the protests shows attacks on police officers and fires breaking out.

Material damage is estimated at tens of millions of euros.

Student unions have called for a nationwide day of protests on Tuesday, while security services fear the demonstrations could lead to further violence.

CGT union leader Sophie Binet told TF1 that its members would take part in order to “protect high school students.”

“We are stunned by what we have witnessed over the past ten days and by the unprecedented crackdown launched by the government against the high school students’ protests,” she said.

Paris police chief Patrice Faure said that those who launched the protests no longer have control over them and called on students to end the blockades and instead protest peacefully, in an open letter published on Saturday on the social media platform X.

The BBC previously reported that teenagers had suffered eye injuries and that at least one had lost a tooth during the unrest. In Angers, a teacher was reportedly struck in the head with an iron bar by a group of attackers who were not from the school. French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said last week that people who did not appear to be high school students were also involved in the unrest.
