The storm also caused power outages.

In addition to Paraguay’s capital, Asunción, where the Santa Ana, Barrio Obrero, Pinoza and downtown areas were affected, hail also fell in the cities of Ñemby, Fernando de la Mora, San Lorenzo, Lambaré and Luque.

Many residents posted footage of damaged vehicles, including cars with shattered windshields and rear windows. One video also shows hailstones punching through the sheet-metal roof of a house in Asunción.

Residents also reported power outages in several major cities via social media, while Paraguay’s National Electricity Administration (ANDE) issued safety recommendations for severe thunderstorms aimed at preventing damage to electrical appliances.

Hailstones the size of a fist

The hail that struck Paraguay was reportedly the size of a human fist. The unusually large ice stones, of a size not seen in years, surprised both residents and experts.

Eduardo Mingo, director of the Directorate of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH), explained that seasonal factors typical of the beginning of spring combined with extreme temperatures and high humidity.

“We are used to thinking of hailstones as being about the size of a fingernail on the little finger. However, this hail was the size of an average person’s fist. They were certainly five to seven centimeters in diameter, and in some places even 10 to 12 centimeters,” Mingo said.

According to him, the storm was a direct consequence of the extreme heat that preceded it.

“You may remember that in the Chaco region, around September 27 or 28, we recorded temperatures of 44 degrees Celsius. In Mariscal Estigarribia, we broke a 74-year-old temperature record,” he recalled.

Such conditions, combined with high humidity, created the conditions for the development of highly unstable storm clouds.

El Niño intensifies instability

Mingo emphasized that atmospheric disturbances are common during the transition from late August into spring, but said the situation is currently being complicated by an additional factor.

“We cannot ignore the influence of El Niño, which for us means more moisture and the kind of heat we have been experiencing. That combination encourages the atmosphere to further intensify what would otherwise be within normal limits,” he explained.

He also added that the effects of El Niño are expected to be felt at least until the end of March or the beginning of April.
