Horrific scene outside school: Man opens fire on children with a shotgun PHOTO/VIDEO
An armed man opened fire outside a high school in western Turkey this morning. According to the latest reports, eight people were injured, most of them students.
The shooting took place outside a vocational and technical high school in Turgutlu, a city in Manisa Province.
The Manisa Governor’s Office confirmed that a shooting had occurred and said that police and medical teams were immediately dispatched to the scene.
According to Habertürk, the attacker opened fire with a shotgun at students arriving at the school.
At least eight people were injured, with initial reports indicating that most of the victims were students. The motive for the attack is not yet known.
The injured were taken by ambulance to Turgutlu State Hospital.
Security camera footage shows the suspect walking down the street with a shotgun in his hand before fleeing the scene shortly afterward with the weapon.
Third Shooting Near a School This Year
Today’s shooting occurred five months after two serious attacks on schools in Turkey, which took place just one day apart.
In Kahramanmaraş, a 14-year-old student opened fire in two classrooms on April 15. The attack killed 10 people—a teacher and nine students—while 13 others were injured.
The attacker was also killed.
A day earlier, a former student attacked a vocational high school in Siverek, in Şanlıurfa Province. He opened fire indiscriminately at students and staff, injuring 16 people, including 10 students and four teachers. He later died by suicide.
Following those attacks, the Turkish Ministry of Education announced additional security measures in schools, including improved cooperation between relevant institutions, stricter control of entry and exit, and earlier identification of potentially dangerous situations.
