Under the previous decision, flights from Catania Airport were due to be suspended until 2 a.m. on Friday.

All arrivals and departures at the airport, the fifth busiest in Italy by passenger numbers, will be suspended until 2 p.m. on August 15, or noon Central European Time, according to a statement from SAC, Reuters reported.

The extended flight suspension comes during the peak summer tourist season and has affected thousands of passengers, while also putting additional pressure on other Sicilian airports.

According to SAC sources cited by the Italian news agency ANSA, the current disruption is the most severe incident to affect Catania Airport in at least two decades.

Between August 6 and 12, more than a third of the 1,974 scheduled flights from Catania were canceled, while around 630 flights were diverted to other airports.

Mount Etna, the most active volcano in Europe, frequently causes disruptions to air traffic in Catania.

Volcanic ash is covering the runways and surrounding areas, while it can also enter aircraft engines and cause serious problems during flight.

The activity of Mount Etna has also affected Malta, south of Sicily, where flights have likewise been canceled due to the ash cloud.
