Firefighting helicopter goes down; Top officials among the victims

Seven people were killed when a firefighting helicopter crashed in Argentina’s San Juan Province, local officials said today.

The Bell 412 helicopter was taking part in firefighting operations in Ischigualasto Provincial Park, a protected area in the western part of the country, located about 1,200 kilometers from Buenos Aires, the Buenos Aires Times reported.

Among those killed were firefighters, police officers, and civil protection personnel, as well as four senior officials from the provincial government — Deputy Police Chief Marcelo Videla, Provincial Fire Service Chief Rubén Castro, Civil Protection Director Carlos Heredia, and Deputy Fire Service Chief Jorge Carbajal.

The aircraft was en route to the neighboring province of La Rioja, where it was supposed to assist in fighting a wildfire.

The cause of the crash is currently unknown and is under investigation.

Rescue teams were dispatched to the crash site, which local media described as a remote and difficult-to-access area.
