"Fire-breathing Dragon" created; A firestorm is about to unleash total chaos PHOTO
As France and Spain battle one of the most severe waves of wildfires in recent years, experts are warning of a rare and extremely dangerous phenomenon that could further worsen the situation.
A massive cloud of this type has formed above the wildfires in France's Gironde region, where the blaze has dangerously approached Bordeaux.
A pyrocumulonimbus is a large storm cloud that develops when an extremely powerful fire releases enormous amounts of heat and energy, as explained by The Guardian and reported by Večernji list.
Hot air and smoke rapidly rise into the atmosphere, where they cool and condense into a cloud that can reach altitudes of 10 to 15 kilometers, and may even penetrate the stratosphere.
Due to its destructive power, NASA describes it as a "fire-breathing dragon among clouds."
However, the problem is not only its size. These clouds can generate their own storms, powerful wind gusts, and lightning strikes that can ignite new fires several kilometers away.
"The cloud is confirmation that this is a highly dangerous fire. It shows that the decision to evacuate a large number of people was fully justified," said Australian fire expert Rick McRae from the University of New South Wales.
The French National Federation of Firefighters stated that it was precisely the wildfire in Gironde that generated such a firestorm.
Due to the dangerous developments, French President Emmanuel Macron called an emergency government meeting for Monday.
The wildfire has approached within around 15 kilometers of Bordeaux, but the city's mayor said there are currently no plans to evacuate the city of approximately 850,000 residents.
However, more than 220,000 people have already been evacuated from surrounding areas.
The situation could be further complicated by an approaching new heatwave, with temperatures across France expected to exceed 40 degrees Celsius.
