Hell near Bordeaux: Wildfire of the century engulfs France, mass evacuation underway VIDEO
A massive wildfire in France's Gironde region has advanced to within 15 kilometers of Bordeaux, while authorities in France and Spain are evacuating hundreds of thousands of people as the devastating blaze continues to spread.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described the situation in Gironde as "unprecedented," warning that the wildfire "has a life of its own."
Jérôme Steffe, the mayor of the town of Cestas, south of Bordeaux, told the BBC that this "will be the wildfire of the century."
He said that 17,000 residents were evacuated from his town overnight after the fire spread rapidly two days earlier. According to him, the blaze has so far burned through 42,000 hectares of land across the region and destroyed 240 homes.
President Emmanuel Macron visited some of the hardest-hit areas in Gironde to show his support for firefighters and other emergency services.
Meanwhile, wildfires continue to rage in other parts of France, including Var, Landes, and Haute-Corse.
