Nearly 88,000 people have been evacuated or ordered to remain indoors due to wildfires in the Madrid region and the province of Ávila, officials said today.

More than 2,700 personnel from various services, along with 426 state ground units, have been deployed so far to fight the wildfires, El País reported.

 

Meanwhile, 24 local roads have been closed due to the fires, according to the newspaper.

Madrid government representative Francisco Martín and his counterpart from Castile and León, Nicanor Sen, said that 29,488 people had been evacuated in the capital region, while 20,262 people had been ordered to remain indoors.

At the same time, in Ávila, the figure stands at around 38,000 people, including both those who have been evacuated and those instructed to stay inside.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited the forward command post and the areas affected by the wildfire, which has already destroyed nearly 45,000 hectares of land across the Madrid region and Ávila.

"We do not know how the wind will behave, although temperatures have dropped," he said.

The president of the Madrid region, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, warned that the expected change in weather conditions could worsen the spread of the fire.

"This unprecedented situation, something that has never been seen before, could lead to much worse scenarios in the coming hours," she said.

The municipality of Cenicientos in the Madrid region, where the forward command post was previously located, must also be evacuated, officials said.

The Spanish government earlier today urged citizens to remain indoors and wear masks when outside due to smoke from wildfires in the Madrid region and the province of Ávila.

At the same time, the capital's authorities warned of worsening air quality due to the presence of particulate matter and other pollutants, urging elderly people, children, and pregnant women to take additional precautions.

Wildfires in the Sierra Oeste area of Madrid and parts of Ávila province have so far destroyed more than 25,000 hectares.
